On Tuesday, ex-Mayor Dave Bing indicated he would have an announcement on Wednesday. That led to speculation that he might announce political plans, and some on social media weren't too excited about that prospect.
Instead, he had some good news on Wednesday that everyone could embrace.
Matt Helms of the Detroit Free Press reports that Bing announced that's he's launching a mentoring, education and jobs-skills program for young African-American men from troubled homes in poor neighborhoods.
“The need is tremendous in Detroit and in urban America, quite frankly, because when you look at statistics relative to how young black males are doing, whether it’s in school or just in their lives, the failure rate is way, way too high,” Bing told the Free Presin the morning in advance of a news conference to announce the kickoff of the Bing Youth Initiative. “The dropout rate, the graduation rate, the increase of boys going to prison for all kinds of infractions makes no sense to me. And we can’t sit idly by and continue to give lip services and not do anything about it.”
