Robert Snell of the Detroit News reports today that ex-water boss  Mercado wants to go to trial separately because he largely agrees with the government's racketeering conspiracy case against Kilpatrick, Kilpatrick's father and Ferguson.

"Mercado's defense in fact prejudices the co-defendants, as he will be largely agreeing with the government's case against the co-defendants, and may supplement their case by revealing unexplored avenues of investigation," Mercado's lawyer, Martin Crandall, wrote in a filing in federal court.

That can't bode well for Kilpatrick and company.
