The beloved Avalon Bakery extends its footprint on Friday with the opening of its third retail store in Detroit that will serve baked goods, quick breakfast items, casual fare for lunch or dinner including pizza, and wine and beer.

The Avalon Cafe and Bakery at 1049 Woodward Ave., across the street from One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit, will have about 40 employes.

"We built our business on our love for the community and love we've received in return has allowed up to expand," saysJackie Victor, CEO of Avalon International Breads.

The menu includes sandwiches, some which are pricey. For example, a Trout Ruben Sandwich, comprised of cornmeal encrusted Indian River rainbow trout, savoy cabbage, root vegetable slaw, swiss cheese and Russian dressing on a pumpernickel roll goes for $14. A grilled chicken sandwich goes for $13 and an egg and cheese sandwich with baked egg, griddled sweet potato, slaw, cheddar, avocado on a challah roll sells for $7.

Victor spoke Thursday at a showing for the media at the store along with Dan Mullen, Bedrock executive vice president.

The store is open 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday., 7 a.m.-midnight Friday, 8 a.m.-midnight Saturday and 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Sun. Call (313) 285-8006 or visit avalonbreads.net.
