Goodwells Natural Foods Market on Willis Street, one of Detroit's few black-owned natural food shops, is  gone -- at least for now.

The business quietly vacated its storefront next to the popular Avalon Bakery, Brenna Houck reports at Eater Detroit. It's unclear if the store will resurface elsewhere, she writes:

Goodwells operated for nearly 10 years in the Cass Corridor, an area has become a target for developers in recent years, resulting in increased competition among some companies, rising rent, and heightened competition for square footage. Last year in profile of Goodwells Market for Model D, co-owner James Wood discussed the challenges to sustaining his small scale organic grocery business with the incoming of Whole Foods:

BLAC Detroit magazine cites a City of Detroit source as saying Goodwells' owners had recently discussed plans to expand.
