Former Detroit Cass Tech star quarterback Jayru Campbell, who became well known in the Metro Detroit area, but for the wrong reasons, is getting a second chance.

David Goricki of the Detroit News reports that Campbell has accepted a scholarship to play football for Garden City Community College in Kansas.

Campbell had previously comitted to Michigan State University. But he got in trouble after he body slammed a security guard, and then assaulted his ex-girlfriend the day he was released from jail afte serving 60 days.

The prospect of going to MSU, which has a first-rate program, disaippeared.

Cass Tech to consecutive state championships his freshman and sophomore years and committed to Michigan State. He missed his senior year, dealing with all his troubles.

The News reports that  Garden City CC head coach Jeff Sims decided to give Campbell another chance.

"I worked with a legendary junior college head coach named Bill Fisk, who played at USC and was my mentor," Sims said, according to the News. "He once told me, 'If not us, then who?' If you can get a kid corrected, you'll do it in football, and that's what we're supposed to do as coaches and educators."
