Drafting first-round players in the NFL is an art -- a combination of intuition, skill and some luck. It obviously can make a world of difference for a team.

Paul Pasche of the The Oakland Press lists the Lions' five worst choices. Here's his list and some of his descriptions of the shortcomings.

► Reggie Rogers: He was drafted in 1987 and only played two seasons in Detroit. In 1988, he was drunk and his car struck and killed three teenagers. He broke his neck and was cut, Pasche writes.

► Mike Williams: "He never should have been a first-round pick, but he was one of the doozies selected by general manager Matt Millen," Pasche writes.

► Charles Rogers: He was picked in 2003 out of Michigan State. He was seriously injured after the fifth game and was injured again later and subsequently got in trouble for substance abuse, Pasche notes.

► Joey Harrington: "He was just never a good fit for the Lions." The quarterback out of Oregon was selected in  2002, Pasche writes.

► Jahvid Best:  Coach Jim Schwartz was super excited to land him as the Lions pick in 2010 , Pasche notes. But he had a concussion history in college and he suffered concussions in the pros as well, which appeared to have shortened his career.
