This is no ordinary election year and this is no everyday occurrence.
Wendy Day, the grassroots vice chair of the Michigan Republican Party, has been ousted from her post for refusing to back Donald Trump and declining to resign, Jonathan Oosting of The Detroit News reports. She calls her opposition a “matter of conscience.”
Day, who backed Ted Cruz in the primary, had her seat vacated Monday under the order of state GOP Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, The News reports, adding that party bylaws let McDaniel unseat anyone who doesn't support the full ticket.
It's the first time that rule has been invoked, the paper says.
“We are a party governed by rules and bylaws, and supporting the nominees is part of the duty of every officer of the party,” Romney McDaniel said in a letter to state committee members. “Each individual elected to serve in an officer role was very clear on the obligations and duties of their position.”
ay, a Howell resident who rose up the party ranks as a tea party activist and prominent Christian conservative, tells the News that she accepts McDaniel's action. She says neither candidate is qualified to be president.
“It’s not a normal year,” Day tells The News. “It’s a strange election year, and so this is just another phase in that strange election year, I guess.”
“Our party deserves leadership that will defend our platform and work to unite the different factions within the party, not divide them," she wrote in a letter to McDaniel.
