Norman Shy, the evil figure at the center of the Detroit Public Schools kickback scandal, won't have much to return to after a prison term.
U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts recently ruled that Shy, a school vendor who pleaded guilty in May to a scheme that involved the district paying more than $2 million for equipment he never delivered, must forfeit his million-dollar Franklin home, a Bloomfield Township condo and several bank accounts, Jennifer Dixon of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Shy admits payng nearly $1 million in kickbacks to 12 DPS principals and an assistant superintendent. He is scheduled to be sentenced in September and faces up to seven years in prison.
He bought his Franklin home in 2014 for $1.1 million and paid another $63,000 for the condo that year, the paper says.
As part of his plea deal, he has to pay $2.76 million in restitution to DPS and $51,667 in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service.
