Dozens of tenants were displaced from an east-side apartment building Sunday night when an arsonist calmly doused a hallway with gasoline and lit a match, The Detroit News reports.

No one was hurt during the 7 p.m. blaze at the complex at Shoemaker and McClellan, largely because of the arsonist's ineptitude.

"He didn't know what he was doing, but this was a fully occupied apartment with lots of women and children," said firefighter Paul Fillmore of Engine 52. "If this guy had known what he was doing, he could have killed a lot of people."

Arson investigators on Monday morning were reviewing video footage of the incident. It shows a man dressed in white walking up and down the second floor with a bleach bottle full of gasoline. He leaves a trail by apartment doors, takes his time and circles back to the other side.
