The latest project by longtime Detroit photographer Michelle Andonian began right outside her Eastern Market neighborhood loft window, as Marney Rich Keenan recounts in a Detroit News column.
The project is titled "The Cut," a performance art piece created with composer and keyboardist Luis Resto. Resto is most well-known for his work with Eminem, Was (Not Was), Anita Baker, Stevie Nicks and Jay-Z.
"The Cut" refers to the Dequindre Cut Greenway, a 1.35-mile, below street-level, paved bike/walk path that runs along the former Grand Trunk Railway line from the Detroit River to Gratiot Avenue.
The collaborators created an eight-minute work (below) with Andonian's stills and video projected onto a screen with Resto in the middle playing his piano.
His live performance becomes part of the video. It is a beautiful, simultaneous, sensory experience. . . .
Two weeks ago, "The Cut" had its official premiere at the Music Hall. Both shows were sold out. There will be more.
